- בִּיטּוּי, בִּטּוּיm. (בטי) vain, useless talk, ref. to vows and oaths which neither benefit nor injure anybody; שבועת ב׳ a useless oath, contrad. to ש׳ שוא a false oath or one asserting something impossible. Shebu.III, 9 sq. Ib. 49b; B. Mets.36a an oath imposed in court אין בה משום שבועת ב׳ does not come under the law of vain oaths (as to sacrifices). Ib. ב׳ שפתים erroneous statement without legal consequences, oppos. to כפירת ממון whereby somebody lost money. Y.Naz.I, beg.51a שביטוי שבועה, read שכִּינּוּיֵי.
